At approximately 11:00 a.m. on January 15, 2025, the Painesville City Fire Department (PCFD) was dispatched to a house fire at 205 Mentor Avenue. Upon arrival, units found flames spreading up the exterior of the large historic home and into the attic. Given the scale of the fire and extreme weather conditions, MABAS Alarm 2311 was activated, escalating the response to a third alarm and bringing in 16 additional fire departments, including Hambden Fire Department.

Coordinated Response in Challenging Conditions

Hambden Fire Department responded as part of the regional mutual aid system, providing critical support as crews worked to contain the fire. The structure, which housed nine apartments, suffered extensive fire, smoke, and water damage, leaving eight residents displaced. Despite the challenges, all occupants and several dogs safely exited the home, and firefighters successfully rescued four cats.

The fire presented additional hazards due to the freezing temperatures, making firefighting efforts more complex. Hambden firefighters assisted with fire suppression, overhaul, and manpower rotation, ensuring sustained operations throughout the incident. PCFD personnel remained on-site overnight to monitor for flare-ups.

Investigation & Fire Safety Reminder

Following an investigation by the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office and the East End Lake County Fire Investigation Unit, the fire was determined to have started on an exterior wall due to the improper use of a torch to thaw ice. The Hambden Fire Department joins PCFD in strongly advising against using open flames or torches for ice removal, as this practice has led to numerous fires across Ohio during winter months.

As colder temperatures approach, residents are reminded to use pipe heating tapes or roof/gutter heating elements designed specifically for thawing ice, rather than torches, space heaters, or open flames near structures.

Working Together to Protect Our Communities

Hambden Fire Department extends gratitude to all responding agencies who worked together in extreme conditions to bring the fire under control and prevent further damage. We remain committed to providing mutual aid support whenever needed to ensure the safety of our neighboring communities.
